Why it matters

Not all bookkeepers
can lodge your BAS

A Registered BAS Agent is legally authorised by the ATO to prepare and lodge Business Activity Statements on your behalf. It's an ATO-issued registration — not a self-declared title. To hold it, Antoinette meets ongoing compliance requirements with the Tax Practitioners Board and carries professional indemnity insurance.

An unregistered bookkeeper cannot legally lodge your BAS — even if they prepare it. If they do, both they and you are exposed to ATO penalties. Most business owners don't know this distinction exists until it's too late.

What We Do

BAS and tax services —
Melbourne & Geelong

Registered BAS Agent services for businesses in Melbourne, Geelong, and the Bellarine Peninsula — accurate lodgements, no missed deadlines.

Your BAS is the quarterly (sometimes monthly) form that tells the ATO what GST you've collected, what you've paid, and what PAYG you've withheld from employees. Get it wrong and you're looking at penalties and interest. Lodge it late and the ATO charges $313 per 28-day period. Lodge it through a Registered BAS Agent and you get extended deadlines the ATO doesn't offer to businesses lodging themselves — and someone accountable if there's ever a query.

The Process

How ALC handles your
BAS lodgement

  1. Gather and review your financial records

ALC reviews all transactions for the BAS period — identifying any gaps, uncategorised items, or discrepancies before work begins.

  2. Reconcile all accounts

Bank accounts, credit cards, and loan accounts are reconciled. All transactions are correctly categorised for GST purposes.

  3. Calculate GST and PAYG obligations

GST collected, GST credits, and PAYG withholding amounts are calculated and verified against your reconciled records.

  4. Prepare and review the BAS

Your BAS is prepared and reviewed for accuracy. Any discrepancies are resolved before lodgement — nothing is submitted without being verified.

  5. Lodge directly with the ATO

Your BAS is lodged via the Tax Agent Portal. You receive confirmation of the lodgement date and the amounts submitted — and you're done.

Common Questions

BAS questions we get
every day

A Business Activity Statement (BAS) is a form lodged with the ATO to report and pay GST, PAYG withholding, and other tax obligations. Most GST-registered businesses lodge quarterly — though some lodge monthly. Late lodgement attracts penalties and interest. ALC manages deadlines on your behalf and takes advantage of the extended lodgement periods available to registered BAS agents.

You can, but errors in your BAS — incorrect GST categorisation, missed reconciliations, wrong instalment amounts — attract ATO penalties and can trigger audits. A Registered BAS Agent like Antoinette reviews and reconciles your accounts before lodgement, not just fills in the form. The difference is accuracy and accountability.

Late lodgement attracts a Failure to Lodge (FTL) penalty from the ATO — currently $313 per 28-day period, up to a maximum of $1,565 for small businesses. Incorrect BAS can trigger ATO audits, amended assessments, and interest charges. ALC's registered BAS agent status means we can also access extended lodgement deadlines unavailable to self-lodging businesses.
